A sequel to King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla vs. Kong is a 2021 American science fiction monster film produced by Legendary Pictures. It is the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse series after Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019).

Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields wrote the script, which Adam Wingard directed. It was written by Borenstein, Dougherty and Shields. After Ghidorah's rampage, Godzilla and Kong face off in Godzilla vs. Kong, which takes place five years after King of the Monsters.

The film's sequel is already in the works.

On Earth in 2024, five years after Godzilla slew his extraterrestrial opponent Ghidorah, Godzilla and Kong are the only Titans still alive. Monarch has been forced to keep Kong in a facility that resembles Skull Island's surroundings due to a storm unleashed by Ghidorah.

However, when Jia comes to Kong and gives him a doll, the Titan, realizing that he is inside the biodome, quickly throws a tree at it.

Bernie Hayes, an employee of the Apex Cybernetics corporation and the host of the Titan Truth Podcast, a Titan conspiracy theory podcast, exfiltrates information pointing to sinister activities at a Pensacola Apex facility, but just as he is about to finish downloading the files, Godzilla appears and launches an unexpected attack. The remains of the facility include a bizarre piece of technology that resembles a huge robotic eye, which Bernie finds after Godzilla's spree of destruction.

Meanwhile, Apex's founder and CEO Walter Simmons engages Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist, to assist them in their quest for a tremendous energy source in the Hollow Earth, a subterranean planet under the Earth and the secret home of the Titans. Nathan is first cautious since his brother attempted to investigate the Hollow Earth and was killed by a powerful anti-gravity field within the tube. He ultimately accepts when Walter unveils Apex's development of Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, customized ship capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.

In order to go to the energy source, Nathan advises using Kong as a guide since Skull Island can no longer contain him (because Kong has grown too large). In the end, Nathan is able to convince Ilene to help stop Godzilla's rampage and find a new home for Kong.

The Apex crew, lead by Walter's daughter Maia, board a customized barge with a barely drugged Kong locked up to keep him from escaping. Jia soothes Kong down by enabling her and Kong to clasp fingers in solidarity while Kong signs the word "home" much to Ilene's surprise. The next day, Ilene tells Nathan about how she raised Jia as her adopted daughter after a series of deadly and unpredictable storms killed all the Iwi and her parents, but Jia was the only one to survive since Kong shielded her, leading to the two of them developing a close friendship.

Because Godzilla has been startled by Kong's deep charges, their combat has been broken up.

Nathan has no option except to stop all of the ships' power in order to deceive Godzilla into thinking he has destroyed them and Kong has been defeated. After seeing the shattered fleet, he swims away, delighted with his win. The team chooses to fly Kong to an Antarctica entry point for the Hollow Earth, where Godzilla was first frozen, as they prepare to reactivate the ships. Kong is told that his home is beyond the door, but Jia refuses to step through it.

Madison and Josh track down Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and decides to help them in their investigation. The team discovers that the "eye" Bernie had described before has disappeared when they arrive to Apex headquarters in New York. The group made the mistake of mistakenly locking and transferring Skullcrawler eggs through an underground tube to Hong Kong, which resulted in the eggs being trapped and moved.

They come face to face with Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanical Godzilla controlled by Ren Serizawa, the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son. Once the mecha is powered up, Walter sends in a massive adult Skullcrawler known as "Number 10" to put Mechagodzilla's Titan-fighting powers to the test. Mechagodzilla grips and restrains the Skullcrawler as it approaches Madison, Josh, and Bernie, before cleaving it in half with a massive red energy beam. The mecha quickly shuts down due to the power supply's limitations.

It is then revealed that Walter intends to harness the power of the Hollow Earth's energy to overcome Mechagodzilla's limitations. In the end, Madison realizes that Apex is trying to get rid of Godzilla and all the Titans so that humans can be the Earth's apex species. In the middle of looking for an exit, Madison and the other people find themselves in a room where Ren is sitting inside the severed head of Ghidorah. The head has been turned into a biological supercomputer and cockpit for Ren to control the robot through radio waves, which he can use to control Mechagodzilla. It was bitten off by Godzilla five years ago during his fight with Ghidorah.

Kong and Nathan's crew discover a similar ecology to Skull Island within the Hollow Earth. They are unexpectedly assaulted while traversing the area by a pair of Warbats, with one of the HEAVs being destroyed. Kong was able to rescue the party by killing the first Warbat and swinging its carcass onto the second, knocking it unconscious. However, the beast recovers and constricts itself around Kong. Before the Warbat has a chance to suffocate Kong, the creature is hit by missiles fired from Nathan's team's HEAV, allowing Kong to escape and savagely beat the monster to death before feeding on the Warbat's intestines.

Sensing Kong's presence in the Hollow Earth, Godzilla drills an atomic breath shaft into the environment, causing the temple to collapse. Kong and Nathan's team fight off a flock of Hellhawks while Maia and her team try to flee in their HEAV, only for Kong to grab it on their way out and, despite Maia attempting to shoot him in order to escape, he instantly crushes the aircraft in his hand after peeking inside to make sure that Jia, Ilene and Nathan aren't in there, killing Maia and her personnel inside.

Hearing Godzilla's scream as he offers him another challenge, Kong accepts and begins to make his way to Hong Kong with his axe in hand through the hole caused by Godzilla's atomic breath, as Ilene, Nathan, and Jia follow him in their HEAV. Kong confronts Godzilla again upon his arrival in Hong Kong, this time obtaining the upper hand over the Titan to the point that he shoves his axe down Godzilla's throat to prevent him from launching his atomic breath. Kong discovers that his axe can not only resist Godzilla's atomic breath, but also absorb it, and uses his weapon to harm the Titan in the thigh, however Godzilla removes and discards the axe. After evading and dodging Godzilla's assaults with the help of Hong Kong's structures and greater agility, Kong recovers his axe and brings it down on Godzilla, causing an explosion that knocks both Titans back, leading Nathan to assume Kong has won the second round.

Both Kong and Godzilla recuperate and rise to their feet, with Godzilla on the hunt for Kong, who hides from the Titan by perching himself atop a tower. Kong throws a construction crane into a building, distracting Godzilla to the point where he ambushes him from above and places the Titan in a chokehold with the intent of strangling him, only for Godzilla to break free and unleash his full fury on Kong, eventually dislocating his left arm, slashing Kong with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong trying to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. With Kong restrained and held down, Godzilla roars fiercely at his opponent in a display of power, while Kong, beaten, roars passionately in defiance against Godzilla.

It seems that Godzilla was impressed by Kong's strength and skill, so he lets him live before walking away. Kong is still alive, but he's in bad shape because of commotio cordis.

While Josh and Bernie unsuccessfully try to deactivate the rampaging robot remotely and Madison tries to call up Mark for help, Godzilla, despite having already grown weary from his earlier battle against Kong, and Mechagodzilla battle, at one point both fire their energy beams at each other which lock together, only for Mechagodzilla to gain the upper hand, knocking Godzilla over and burning him. While Mechagodzilla continues to overwhelm and badly beat Godzilla, Nathan, Ilene, and Jia approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia senses that his heartbeat is slowing down. Ilene explains that they can't produce a charge big enough to restart Kong's heart, but Nathan, having remembered what Maia said earlier about the HEAVs producing a charge big enough to power Las Vegas for a week, flies the remaining HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and releasing a huge electrical charge which instantly revives Kong.

As Mechagodzilla prepares to fire its red energy beam down Godzilla's throat, Kong leaps onto the robot and redirects the beam into the air, saving Godzilla's life in the process. Realizing that Kong saved his life and sensing an ally in him upon seeing that he is not an enemy, Godzilla helps Kong fight against Mechagodzilla.

The atomic breath of Godzilla strikes Kong's clutching his axe, supercharging it and allowing Kong to dismember Mechagodzilla limb from limb and pull its head off before holding up his trophy and taking a break.

With a length of 113 minutes, Godzilla vs. Kong is the shortest chapter in the MonsterVerse.

The sequence in which Kong slams his right shoulder (which had previously been dislocated) against a structure to realign it may be a reference to Martin Riggs' famed ability of a similar sort in the Lethal Weapon series.

The anime Neon Genesis Evangelion is often referenced throughout the film.

Kong's hops from ship to ship are comparable to Eva Unit-02's jumps from ship to ship to evade an angel, which is similar to Godzilla's jumps from ship to ship.

The base where Mechagodzilla is stationed has a striking similarity to the Central Dogma, being subterranean and topped by a pyramid.
